In non-English speaking countries like India, English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is quite common, now a days. A student who learns core subjects in English as a second language needs to develop English language proficiency, information processing and communication skills in English before learning the content knowledge in order to master the subject. In a high academically focussed, content rich educational system, neither the teacher nor a student has time or resources to learn, practice and master these additional skills. Moreover, experience and expertise of the first and second language and mastery in the relevant subject areas are essential to provide an integrated learning platform (integrating knowledge and skills).
This is where we come in. Having studied in our first language for the first 10 years of our education and then transitioning to EMI to learn Maths and Science, we, Dr Suhasini Shankar and [Dr] Uma Maheswari have first-hand experience in the challenges involved in learning Science in English and learning English as a language rather than as a subject. We have over six decades of combined research and teaching experience in Sydney, Australia and in India. It is our mission to provide integrated learning platform to all schools so that their students are masters in applying their knowledge in real world situations, expert information processors, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and great communicators.
Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) assesses and ranks the academic performance of 15 years old students across several countries. It assesses if school systems are effective in preparing their students for further studies or work. It tests if students can apply what they learnt in school in real world situation in subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Reading, collaborative problem solving or financial literacy. Students are tested to interpret texts, solve mathematical problems, or explain a phenomenon scientifically using their knowledge and reasoning skills. It also tests if 15-year olds have social and emotional skills such as teamwork, critical thinking communication and problem solving that are required for them to thrive.
